Drywall Estimate & Takeoff Template

Board area to sheets, screws, mud, tape, and a priced bid

An Excel drywall estimating template: enter wall and ceiling area to get sheets, screws, joint compound, and tape counts, then price materials, hang and finish labor, and markup into a bid.

Drywall takeoffs die by a thousand small quantities. The sheet count is easy; the screws, mud, and tape get guessed, the waste gets forgotten, and hang and finish labor get lumped into one rate even though they run at very different speeds. The result is a bid that looks fine on paper and loses on the finish.

This workbook does the quantity work for you on one Estimate sheet. Enter wall and ceiling square footage and a waste percentage (default 10%), choose your sheet size (32 square feet for 4x8, 48 for 4x12), and it rounds up to whole sheets. From board area it auto-fills the consumables with standard rules of thumb: screws at about one pound per two sheets, joint compound at one box per 450 square feet, and tape at one roll per 1,500 square feet. Corner bead is a count you enter, misc items (mesh, sandpaper, adhesive) are a lump sum, and sales tax is applied to the materials subtotal. Labor is split the way the trade works: a hang rate (default 150 square feet per hour) and a finish rate to level 4 (default 100 square feet per hour), each producing hours that are multiplied by your burdened labor rate. The pricing block applies your markup (default 20%) to total direct cost and reports bid price, gross profit, and gross margin. A Price Book sheet lists 12 drywall line items (hang 1/2 inch and 5/8 inch fire-rated, finish to level 4 and level 5, ceilings, patch and repair, corner bead, knockdown and orange peel texture, soundproofing board, access panels, haul and dispose) with blank unit-price cells, and a Read Me sheet covers the four steps. 22 formulas across 3 sheets, the most complete of the three KlipPack trade templates, no macros.

First 15 minutes: enter the board area from your last job, pick your sheet size, and compare the sheet, screw, mud, and tape counts with what you actually bought. Then set your hang and finish rates from that job's hours and the bid will reflect your crew, not a textbook.

Who it's for

For drywall subcontractors and remodelers who hang and finish their own board and want sheets, consumables, and labor priced from one entry. Not for a full remodel with several trades and overhead; the Contractor Estimating & Job-Profit System is the right file for that.

Use it when

  • A GC texts you a board footage and wants a hang-and-finish number back within the hour
  • You keep running short on mud and tape and want the consumables sized from board area
  • You want finish labor priced separately from hang so level 5 jobs stop eroding margin
  • You are switching crews between 4x8 and 4x12 board and need sheet counts for each

Common questions

What software do I need?

Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets. It is a plain .xlsx with standard formulas and no macros.

Does it count sheets and materials?

Yes. It adds waste to your board area, rounds up to whole sheets at the sheet size you choose, and auto-fills screws (about 1 lb per 2 sheets), joint compound (1 box per 450 sq ft), and tape (1 roll per 1,500 sq ft). Corner bead is a count you enter.

Can I change the consumable rules of thumb?

Yes. The ratios are written directly in the formulas on the Estimate sheet (450 and 1,500 square feet, 2 sheets per pound), so you can edit them to match the mud and tape your crew actually burns.

Why not a free template or ChatGPT?

A free calculator will give you a sheet count. This sheet turns board area into every consumable, splits labor into hang and finish hours at your rates, applies tax, and shows the margin on the bid, with a 12-item Price Book beside it. Rebuilding those links in a generated table is the work you are buying your way out of.
